Our Favorite Local Beaches in the Mystic, CT Area

All less than a 30-minute drive from Abbey’s Lantern Hill Inn, these are our favorite local beaches:

1. East Beach, Watch Hill, Rhode Island: Nestled within the charming village of Watch Hill, this is widely considered the most desirable beach in the local area due to its combination of natural beauty and classic New England preppy vibes. It’s no surprise Taylor Swift bought a vacation home here where she hosts an annual 4th of July party. Find East Beach by following the main street up the hill past the carousel. You can walk the beach for miles with its vast stretches of fine white sand. Accessing the beach is free, but parking is at a premium in July and August. Those with patience can be rewarded with a free 2-hour parking spot on the main street. Those preferring a more extended day at the beach must park in a paid lot. Arrive early as spots go quickly. Bring a picnic lunch or stop into a charming cafe on the main street. The Olympia Tea Room has been a Watch Hill mainstay for decades and has good food.

2. Napatree Beach, Rhode Island: Escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature at Napatree Point Conservation Area, just a short walk from Watch Hill’s main street. Tucked away on a tranquil peninsula, this hidden gem boasts untouched dunes and coastal vegetation, creating a stunning backdrop free from manmade distractions. With views of both Watch Hill Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll feel a world away from the hustle and bustle, allowing you to unwind to the soothing melody of crashing waves and gentle sea breezes. At Napatree, birdwatchers will be enchanted by sightings of piping plovers, terns, and ospreys, while playful seals often grace the nearby sandbars with their presence. Experience the beauty of Watch Hill in its purest form.

3. Misquamicut State Beach, Rhode Island: Just a few miles east of Watch Hill, Misquamicut is a down-to-earth hangout for those who like to mix a bit of a party vibe with their beach-going. At the state beach, there is a paid public parking lot which you can pre-book online. With 3 miles of coastline, this family-friendly beach offers soft sands perfect for sunbathing, sandcastle building, and leisurely strolls. Down the beach are several beach bars that often have live music during the season and serve basic food.

4. Sandy Point Beach, Connecticut: The 35-acre sandbar, formerly connected to nearby Napatree Point off Watch Hill, was transformed into its own little island during the Hurricane of 1938. Sandy Point Beach is accessible by water. Kayakers can launch from nearby Barn Island Boat Launch where parking is free, for a moderate paddle to Sandy Point. A beach pass is required to access Sandy Point, and can be purchased through the Stonington Community Center website. Daily passes can be purchased for $10.

5. Bushy Point Beach, Bluff Point State Park, Connecticut: Situated at the mouth of the Thames River in Groton, Bluff Point State Park is a nature lover’s paradise encompassing over 800 acres of pristine coastal wilderness. Areas of the park feature scenic trails that lead to secluded coves and rocky shores, offering hiking, birdwatching, and photography opportunities. Discover the beauty of Connecticut’s natural landscape as you explore the rugged coastline, salt marshes, and dense woodlands. The start of Bushy Point Beach is a mile trek down the main trail. Because of the terrain and distances, it’s best not to bring a lot of gear. Parking here is free in a large public lot. You can also launch paddleboards and kayaks from just off the parking lot at Bluff Point.

So, pack your sunscreen, grab your beach towel, and escape to coastal bliss in this idyllic corner of New England. With miles of sandy shores, shimmering waters, and panoramic views, your perfect beach day awaits along these captivating coastlines. Extend your getaway and visit a few.
