Meet the Innkeepers: Erika & Peter

How Did You Become An Innkeeper?

Erika: I worked alongside the original owner and founder of Abbey’s Lantern Hill Inn for several years before purchasing it from him in 2011. I have over 20 years of hospitality experience and am committed to providing my guests with rejuvenating unique getaway experiences.

Peter: In 2014, I serendipitously found my way to the inn all the way from England as a guest. A few years later, I married Erika and have helped her with the inn since then. I share her passion for ensuring every guest enjoys a truly wonderful stay.

What Did You Do Before You Were an Innkeeper?

Erika: After college, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica. I was assigned to work at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, promoting environmental awareness. My favorite memories from that time include learning to scuba dive, meeting Prince Charles, and leading a group of 20 children on a 3-day hike to the top of the Blue Mountains. After Peace Corps, I completed a Master of Public Service degree in Arkansas, worked for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and traveled extensively in the Caribbean on a 30-foot sailboat.

Peter: I spent my first 11 years in Geneva, Switzerland and traveling to England to attend school. During that time, I enjoyed playing field hockey, rugby, and cricket. After university, I spent many years working in commercial interiors and raising my family in England and Scotland.

What Special Qualities Do You Bring To Your Innkeeping Role?

Erika: I grew up in the Ledyard-Mystic area and have lived here most of my life. I love exploring the local area, finding the best places to eat and play, and sharing these with my guests. My appreciation for great food made with fresh, natural ingredients has its roots in the kitchen of my maternal grandparents, who immigrated here from Europe. I am a passionate environmentalist and believe businesses should be run with a mind to limiting their negative impact on the natural environment. You’ll see my commitment to environmental responsibility in every aspect of the inn’s operation. I also believe in celebrating our local cultural traditions rooted in the Native American community and maritime heritage.

Peter: My international upbringing and extensive travels around Europe enrich my perspective on hospitality. When I’m not helping with breakfast on weekends, I can often be found in the inn’s many gardens keeping them looking lovely.

What Do You Like To Do When You’re Not Innkeeping:

Erika: I like going to the beach, kayaking, paddleboarding, yoga, happy hour oysters, making pasta from scratch, and growing fruits and vegetables.

Peter: I cheer on West Ham United Football Club, watch rugby, cook Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, and visit my children and grandchildren.

What Are Your Favorite Foods?

Erika: Mexican street tacos and Sicilian cannoli

Peter: Indian curries

What Countries Have Your Visited?

Erika: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Antigua, Nevis, St. Maarten, Italy, Romania, England, Scotland, Hungary, St. Barts, Spain, and France.

Peter: Italy, Jamaica, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Canary Islands, Croatia, Turkey, Portugal, Denmark, Ireland, South Africa, Canada, and Mexico

Meet Lucky the Cat:

She found her way into our lives one rainy evening in 2019, a little rough around the edges and homeless but full of loving purr-sonality. If you’d like a furry cuddle from a meow-tastic companion during your stay, Lucky is generally very friendly. We do not allow Lucky in any guestrooms for those with allergy concerns. She is only allowed in common areas.

At Abbey’s Lantern Hill Inn, every moment is curated to provide an unparalleled experience. From personalized travel recommendations to catering to special dietary needs, and the tranquil ambiance of our gardens, we help create memories that will last for many years.
